A Dance Filled NYC Trip

October 27, 2008

Last week I wrote about the musical Billy Elliot . Yesterday there was an article in the NY Times. It turns out that while the play was in previews, there were many times when they had to stop the show because there were problems with the scenery and equipment. We were fortunate when we saw the play – there were no problems  of this nature. The article also mentioned that the play does not follow the movie.  It was written to emphasize the coal miners’ strike rather than the story about the young boy’s quesst to be a dancer. I was expecting it to be more about the dancer.

In additon to seeing the play, I attended a workshop at the NYC Ballet. This is the fourth time that I’ve attended the annual event, and each time I pick up information to share will my students. I found the session on nutrition to be very informative. The workshop on stretching was also interesting, but I was hoping to come back with some different stretches. This was not the case, but it was fun seeing students from the School of American Ballet perform the stretches. They alwys finish the workshop with performances by the students and or other dance groups. It’s amazing to see these young dancers perform – and we’re right up close!

Next weekend brings another trip to NYC. This time it’s to catch a performance by American Ballet Theatre. Can’t wait:)

Billy Elliot – The Musical

October 20, 2008

While I was in NYC this past weekend, I got to see the Broadway play Billy Elliot – The Musical. The play is still in previews and doesn’t open until November. It was enjoyable, but I didn’t walk away with that “wow” feeling.

However, the two young actors, David Alvarez (Billy) and Frank Dolce (Billy’s friend Michael), were fabulous. I couldn’t believe the level of their dancing. The other young performers also did a great job.

The part of older Billy Elliot was played by Stephen Hanna, former principal dancer with New York City Ballet. I expected more from him and was disappointed that he only danced in one number. He did a fine job, but it seemed like he was out of shape.

All in all, it was a fun evening. It has made me want to see the movie again.

Online Ballet Dictionary

October 13, 2008

There is a great online ballet dictionary on American Ballet Theatre’s (ABT) website. They have video clips of ABT dancers performing ballet steps. I had seen it a couple of years ago, but then the link that I had didn’t work anymore. I stumbled across it the other day and want to share it with everyone.

Dance Season at the Egg in Albany, NY

October 5, 2008

I planned to write about the bjm_danse performance that was held at the Egg this past Friday. Unfortunately I did not make it to the show.

The Egg is a great place to see dance performances and there are lots of other dance performances coming up this season. Hopefully I’ll be able to make some of those. Go to to see what’s in store.
